If you only travel within the borders of the United Kingdom and you want to get insurance to cover cancellation, personal belongings etc, or if you are travelling to a region of the UK where NHS treatment is not available, such as the Channel Islands, then a UK travel insurance policy is what you need, however, you should be aware that a single-trip travel policy that covers the European geographical area will also cover trips within the United Kingdom in a lot of cases, and as there are more insurers offering policies for European travel rather than for exclusively UK travel the market is more competitive and therefore the prices may be lower. Although, as with all insurance products, you still need to read the policy wording carefully so that you understand the limitations of cover included in the policy as some insurers do specifically exclude UK trips. So a UK travel insurance policy is not necessarily exclusively for travel within the UK but may be for a wider geographical area. Also an annual multi-trip policy would likely cover UK trips providing they meet certain criteria, usually a minimum number of nights in pre-paid accommodation. So, if you already have an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy then you need to check the policy wording to see if you are already covered before purchasing a new policy at additional cost. As examples, the coverage for UK only trips, for UK residents, included in the annual multi-trip policies available to buy online through our website at www.annualtravel.com are these; for Plan A and Plan B cover is only provided for travel within the United Kingdom or Channel Islands if you stay for at least two nights in pre-booked accommodation away from where you usually live, some sections of cover do not apply or are amended for UK only trips and these are detailed in the policy wording; for Plan C the requirement is that you have pre-booked a minimum of three consecutive nights in paid accommodation away from home, there are also amendments to the conditions and exclusions of cover applying to UK only trips which are detailed in the policy wording. The most noticeable limitation in cover for UK residents with a UK travel insurance policy would be the restricted emergency medical cover included in the policy as the NHS, or another provider of healthcare services if you have a private healthcare policy, would be expected to treat any medical condition, as it would if you were still at home, so there are no additional expenses incurred while travelling exclusively within the UK that the travel insurer would be expected to pay, however, one aspect of cover that may be included in the policy, but not necessarily, is UK medical transfer, which is transfer to a suitable hospital nearer to your home when you are sufficiently recovered to so do while still requiring hospital treatment, although there will likely be a minimum distance from your home beyond which you would have needed to travel prior to requiring treatment.
